Karlovac city Museum

Karlovac city Museum has been active for over a century. City’s fathers first started to give the thought to the idea of a city Museum in the 19th century. However, due to the lack of interest and more importantly money, the Museum wasn’t founded until 1911. Its start was a modest one, the Museum was stationed in one room on the 2nd floor of the City Hall. The Museum collected items in its early days, but those activities came to an abrupt end with the start of the World War I, and they didn’t continue until well after the end of World War II. In 1952 the Museum got its first curator. Her name was Ivana Vrbanić and she was a professor.

The very next year the Karlovac city Museum was granted a permanent home. It was located in one of the oldest preserved objects in Karlovac – a baroque curia that dates back to the early 17th century, when it was built by Karlovac’s general Vuk Krsto Frankopan. It remains the home of the Museum to this day. Karlovac city museum encompasses four different entities, the Museum itself, Vjekoslav Karas Gallery, Castle Dubovac and Turanj military complex.

Karlovac city Museum via vacationsKarlovac city museum contains a vast collection of information on flora and fauna that is specific for the Karlovac region, a geological collection that includes fossils of plants and animals, archaeological findings from the Karlovac area encompassing the entire history of Karlovac and settlements that were located in its place before it, dating back to pre-Roman times. Newer exhibits include objects and artwork from the 19th century, ranging from objects that were used in everyday life of a common man to those which were found only in the aristocrat households.

Vjekoslav Karas Gallery was built in 1975 in the New center. The exhibit room on the first floor of the building is highly attractive and extremely well equipped with artwork. In addition to the permanent exhibit, the Gallery hosts visiting art and museum exhibits. The main focus of the Gallery is to present the modern art scenes of both Karlovac and Croatia.

Castle Dubovac is one of the more attractive, if not the most attractive object in Karlovac. This castle is the first thing most think of when Karlovac is mentioned. It hosts a viewpoint from which tourists can see entire Karlovac and its tallest tower also contains a permanent exhibit called Around Kupa and Korana.

Karlovac city Museum military complex Turanj via vacationsMilitary complex Turanj is located on the southern outskirts of Karlovac. The remains of an old Austrian garrison can be found here. They are a vivid reminder of the intriguing role Karlovac and its region played during the turbulent times of the Ottoman threat in Croatia. When it was built it served as a guard station for the Dubovac Castle. Turanj also played a big role in the Croatian War of Independence in which it served the same role as it served when it was built. It was a guard post upon which the invading force was fought off time and time again. As such it is a symbol of victory and perseverance among all citizens of Karlovac.
