Rijeka travel destination is located in the Kvarner Gulf, which is located in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. The city is the largest Croatian port and the third largest Croatian city. The first mentions of the name Rijeka date back to the first half of the 13th century, when two settlements named Trsat and Rijeka are mentioned in historical scripts. Medival Rijeka was a feudal town fortified with walls that featured two divided towns. The upper part was military inclined, while the lower town was called Rika and it served as a trade center.

Habsburg monarchy took command of the town in 1466. and this enabled Rijeka’s growth in the 15th and 16th century. The arrival of the Jesuits in the 17th century marked the start of Rijeka’s growth in a cultural sense. Jesuits established the Jesuit Gymnasium in 1627 and this landmark is considered as the starting point of Rijeka’s University.

Wars with the Ottoman Empire and conflicts with Venice halted Rijeka’s progress as a trade port, but the city got back on track once Charles the VI of the Holy Roman Empire named Rijeka as a free city port. Late 18th and early 19th century were the periods in which Rijeka was under French command due to Napoleon’s conquests. The city was liberated from its French occupying force in 1813.

In 1843 Rijeka was annexed to Croatia as a reward for being on the Habsburg side in conflicts with the anti-Habsburg movement. Ban Josip Jelačić was its governor during that time. This didn’t last long as Rijeka was taken under Hungarian control thanks to the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement.
The 20th century saw the city being fought over by Italians and Croatians. Italians made their claims based on the fact that the major part of citizens of Rijeka was of Italian ancestry, while the Croatian side made their claims based on te fact that Croatians were the majority in Rijeka’s greater circle.
