Kraneamus – Krapina Neanderthal museum is the place you could meet Stone age and Neanderthal people who lived at that time in very realistic and unique ways of presenting.
Krapina’s Neanderthal finding place „Hušnjak hill“ close to town Krapina is endorsed as a first paleontological monument of nature in Croatia, and one of the most substantial archeological findings of Neanderthal epoch in the world. Inside of a semi-cave in year 1899. paleontologist, paleoanthropologist and geologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger, exhumed fossil of Homo sapiens neandhertalensis – afterwards named „Dedek Kajbumšćak“. Digging lasted for six years, under guidance of Mr. Kramberger. On the site, around 900 fossils of early men were found, copious remaining of Pleistocene animals (cave bear, wolf, rhinoceros, giant elk, beaver), and a couple of hundreds of Stone Age tools dating to Paleolithic era.
Krapina Neanderthal museum – Kraneamus, with its current appearance, was opened in February 2010. With area of 1200m2 it is one of the most modern museum project in Croatia, and in this part of the Europe, in general. Museums architecture evokes the habitat of the ancient man. The semi-cave which collapsed was restored to summon essence of life as it once was.
Face of museum is fully covered in reflecting glass mirroring the surrounding forest. Under the building a stream runs, which represents the passage of time, and the thin line where the present and the past meet. Entire interior is made out of concrete trying to induce the spirit of time.
Idea of presenting and reconstructing the theory of evolution of modern man is skillfully presented through 18 different themes. Chronologically composed exhibition, takes us on a trip through evolution. With an attempt to reconstruct phenomena of our existence on Earth, it is taking us back in time to the point of beginning of creation of life, as we now perceive it, up to the point where we currently stand as modern men. World’s biggest diorama of that kind embodies a scene of Neanderthal community gathered around the fire in the semi-cave. Lots of interactive multimedia installations, movie projections, holograms, virtual walks, workshops and professional guidance assure the stimulation all five of visitor’s senses and most surely a memorable experience.
